Although we know that technical competency alone doesn’t make an effective leader, all too often businesses promote people to leadership roles without the skills they need to inspire, motivate and engage their teams.

Succession issues

They need to replace their current leaders, but the people most technically equipped to replace them don’t have strong leadership skills and they’re worried that team engagement and performance will suffer

The solutions

According to the 2016 Study of Australian Leadership, leadership development plays an important role for key workplace outcomes, such as performance and innovation. Leadership development relates positively to leader self-efficacy and leadership capability of workplace leaders, which in turn relate positively to workplace outcomes. The same study found that underperforming workplaces offered fewer leadership development opportunities than higher performing organisations.
