Procrastination and how to overcome it, by Julie Watson

Procrastination

Procrastination is one of those things we all do for various reasons: we know that it’s not helpful but we still do it.  Recently I was thinking about something that I have been procrastinating on and it hit me.

We ‘Procrastinate’ when we feel uncertain of ourselves, skills, knowledge or ability.  We’ll often hide or mask this with excuses ranging from:

  • I don’t have time
  • I’m working on it / it’s not quite there yet
  • It’s not a priority at the moment
  • There’s so many other things to do

The list goes on and on, but they are excuses.

Think about something you’ve been ‘procrastinating’ on: what have been your BS excuses…?

Here are some tips for overcoming ‘Procrastination’

Know the Value and Link to Your Goal(s)

  1. Know the value in the activity/ task you are doing. What does it link to? Is it going to help / assist you in achieving your goals?

Know Your Style

  1. Sometimes we can get caught up in the ‘right way’ thinking. This literally stop us in our tracks. e. we can see others doing things in a certain way and can get attached to doing things in ways that are right for other people. The challenge here is that this might not suit our own style.

Here’s an example: for months I’ve wanted to, and known that I need to, write blogs and have online presence.  But I’ve put it off masking it with a multitude of excuses.  Then I realized that I was thinking that I had to write similar or the same to other people that I know.  Then I realized that how they write isn’t me.  They write excellent and detailed blogs, but I struggle to read something that is long & detailed.  So how could I possibly write something that I would struggle to read myself?
